The 65-year-old first hit the headlines in March 2002 when he was reported missing in a canoe in North Sea.

His then wife Anne collected more than £500,000 in life insurance payouts as he secretly hid away in their home - leaving their two sons to believe he was dead.

More than five years later in December 2007, Darwin walked into a London police station insisting he had been suffering from amnesia.

But the couple's deceit was uncovered when a photograph emerged of the pair posing together after his supposed death.

Darwin, from Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, served half a six-year prison sentence for the huge fraud.

National newspaper reports say he is now lives with Filipina bride Mercidita – 23 years his junior – in a dormitory building and supplements his UK pension working on his market trader wife’s stall selling underwear and T-shirts in the Philippines capital.
