Caring Alex is always there for little Alfie

The little brother of a disabled Hartlepool schoolboy has been praised by his mum for the care and support he provides his older sibling.

Alfie Smith was born with cerebral palsy which affects his movement in his arms and legs.

The condition leaves him unable to dress himself, walk or join in many activities older brothers would get up to like playing football and running around in the park.

Alex helps Alfie with everyday things like walking.

It also leaves him heavily dependent on his mum Annie Stalley.

Alfie’s younger brother Alex, seven, also plays his part by helping his brother with everyday tasks and his physio.

The youngster said: “My brother is very nice, kind and helpful. He helps me and makes me very happy.

“I love him very much.”

Alex and Alfie Smith have a close bond as brothers.

Alfie’s family are currently trying to raise £50,000 for the nine-year-old to undergo selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery - an operation which would increase the spasticity in his muscles.

It is hoped the operation would enable him to one day be able to walk unaided.

Alex said: “It would be really nice for Alfie to be able to walk. I would like people to help so I we can go for walks in the park.”

At the moment Alfie is an ideal candidate to undergo the life-changing surgery, however, if his condition deteriorates he will no longer suitable.

This means his family are in a race against time to raise the cash needed to pay for the operation which would be carried out at Leeds General Infirmary.

The youngster undergoes intense physiotherapy which can leave him in severe pain and twice a year has Botulinum injections to make it easier for his exercises to be carried out.

Their mum Annie said: “They have such a close bond as brothers and it’s great to see.

“Alex is like the older brother always looking out for Alfie and helping him.

“They are like best friends and get on so well.

“I have to spend a lot of time with Alfie and sometimes I feel like Alex is missing out, but he’s always there, willing to help. I’m really lucky.” A number of fundraising nights have been organised to help Alfie hit his £50,000 target.

A psychic evening will take place on Thursday, November 24, at the Hour Glass in Eaglesfield Road from 7pm.

The night will feature psychic demonstrations and private readings. Tickets cost £6.
