Casualty on railway tracks taken to hospital as trains between Sunderland and Hartlepool are cancelled

A person has been taken to hospital after emergency services were called to reports of a ‘casualty on the tracks’ near Hartlepool.

Services between Sunderland and Thornaby travelling in both directions have been cancelled – with disruption expected until around 2pm on Wednesday, June 16.

Emergency services were called to the railway line near Hartlepool to reports of a casualty on the tracks at around 11.30am.

Paramedics attended and the British Transport Police have confirmed a person has been taken to hospital for further treatment.

Stations in Stockton, Billingham, Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, Horden, Seaham, Sunderland and Heworth will not be served while the incident is ongoing.

A spokeswoman for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line near Hartlepool at around 11:30am today (Wednesday 16 June) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended the scene and a person is being taken to hospital for further treatment.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

Services will be cancelled or diverted between Thornaby and Newcastle as train operator Northern confirm ticket acceptance has been arranged on the Tyne and Wear Metro for passengers who are travelling between Newcastle and Sunderland.

Road transport has been requested to help passengers complete their journey – although travel times will be extended by up to 60 minutes.

A spokesman for Northern said: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Thornaby and Sunderland the line is blocked.

“Services through these stations will be cancelled or diverted between Thornaby and Newcastle. Disruption is expected until 2pm.

“Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident Thornaby and Newcastle. Stockton, Billingham, Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, Horden, Sunderland and Heworth will not be served.

“To help you complete your journey, road transport has been requested, journey times by road will be extended by up to 60 minutes.

“Ticket acceptance has been arranged on the Tyne & Wear Metro for passengers to travel between Newcastle and Sunderland.”

It is not known how long the line will remain blocked although Northern has told passengers to expect disruption until around 2pm on Wednesday afternoon.
