The club suffered decades of turbulent seasons after winning its first-ever promotion in 1968.

But all problems were forgotten in a blaze of euphoria after a second promotion was secured in 1991.

Indeed, lifting the club from Division Four was seen by many as one of the biggest achievements possible at the Victoria Ground.

Chairman Garry Gibson, who nursed Pools through a winter of discontent with a £200,000 lifeline in 1989, said at the time:

“I’ve no doubt the club would have gone into the Vauxhall Conference, and then who knows where.

“I think the new regime gave everyone a lift. It got people thinking ‘this lad is either daft, or he wouldn’t put his money in if he didn’t think something would happen’. And it did happen.”
