Through an efficiency system - which provides regular electricity consumption by the hour - staff were able to work out when equipment was being used unnecessarily so they could make an energy saving.

Detectors were also installed for use at night so lights automatically turn on then off as security patrols pass.

The centre’s general manager Mark Rycraft said: “This has been a real team effort of rigorous planning and we have all worked very hard to improve our environmental impact.
“The systems we now have in place are working incredibly well delivering effective solutions in reducing the centre’s energy consumption and we are delighted to be recognised for this.”

The centre has also installed LED lighting and has the largest solar panels array in Hartlepool on its roof, providing a large amount of its power and enough for 60 homes via the gird.

Mark added: “Without the full support from our team and retailers we would never have accomplished our target and to be recognised for this with a Green Apple award is a great achievement for us.”
