Catcote Academy hosted a Fairtrade Big Breakfast morning when a South American coffee producer spoke about how the Fairtrade organisation helps growers like her.

A town wide breakfast muffin competition when people were tasked with making the treats with Fairtrade ingredients was also judged.

It was all part of Fairtrade Fortnight which runs until March 13 and is organised with the Hartlepool Fairtrade Steering Group. This year’s theme is on breakfast.

Guests, including MP Iain Wright, enjoyed Fairtrade jams, juices, muesli breakfast pots, drop scones, honey, marmalade cake along with Fairtrade tea and coffee.

Special guest was Luz Marina Garcia Ruiz, a Fairtrade producer from Colombia who danced with the students before explaining how Fairtrade has changed her life and answering questions from the students and members of the community.

Teacher Barry Currell, of Catcote Academy, said: “I am delighted with the enthusiasm our students have shown towards Fairtrade and in particular when meeting Luz.

“They spent lots of time preparing for this visit which has helped them understand the positive impact Fairtrade has on people in other parts of the world.”

Over 30 muffins were entered in the competition and judged on their appearance, use of Fairtrade ingredients and of course taste.

The winners were Clavering Primary School students Kimberly and Scott Temple.
