Crime and disorder will not be tolerated - police warn kids and parents in run up to holidays

A number of parents and their children have been visited by police and partners who have warned that they will be dealt with robustly if they are involved in any type of antisocial behaviour and criminal damage over the holiday break.

The warning comes on the back of strong messages by senior officers about parental responsibility.

Historically, police see an increase in calls at this time of the year and police want both parents and their children to understand that there is no excuse for this type of behaviour and that those who flout the law will suffer the consequences. Parents could even face losing their home under breaches of their tenancy agreements and criminal action could be taken if deemed appropriate.

Assistant Chief Constable Jason Harwin said: “Those who commit acts of crime and criminal damage may see it as acceptable – but they are causing misery and suffering for others, and this behaviour won’t be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly and robustly.

“My message to parents is: ‘Do you know where your children are and what they are doing?

“We’ll be carrying out high visibility patrols and also signposting youths to diversionary activities which have been set up in conjunction with Local Authorities.

“Let this be a warning to those who think it’s acceptable to commit crime this half term, we won’t tolerate it and you may well face criminal proceedings in a court of law.”

And the message from Cleveland Fire Brigade is to “Be Safe Not Sorry” and only attend organised events over this period.
