Kieron Robinson, 29, was tracked down by Cleveland Police’s super sniffer after he abandoned the £2,000 CRV machine which had been stolen four days earlier in a Hartlepool house burglary.

Robinson, who had no part in the raid, bought it on Facebook for £400 and was spotted on the Coast Road by Izzy’s handler at 2.15am on Friday, May 31 last year, Teesside Crown Court was told.

Prosecutor Jenny Haigh said as soon as the police vehicle’s siren and blue lights came on, Robinson sped off reaching 100mph on Easington Road before switching off the bike’s lights and mounting the footpath.

Robinson abandoned the bike next to a parked car in Lime Crescent where Izzy was released to lead the hunt and it ended in his arrest.

He said he did not know anything about the burglary. He said he bought it for £400 on Facebook and he claimed he had the logbook and keys but he did not provide them as proof.

He had a previous conviction for dangerous driving in 2015 when he was given a six months suspended sentence and was disqualified.

Stephen Constantine, defending, said there was no suggestion of impairment and nothing was damaged.

He said Robinson was in a relationship and had a nine-month-old child but it ended, and that partly explained his actions.

Judge Stephen Ashurst said: “There could have been people making their way home at that hour and clearly you had no thought for that.

“I make it clear that you had no involvement in the burglary, but if you bought the bike for £400 then you must have known that there was something about its history that caused you to ask no further questions.”
