Cleveland Police officer in court charged with improper exercise of his duty

A Cleveland Police officer is facing offences of improper exercise of his duty and has appeared in court.

Robert Coffey, 33, has been charged with two counts of improper exercise of police powers and privileges by a constable.

The first count alleges that he failed to investigate an allegation of assault upon a female at Hartlepool between March 22 and 25 last year.

The second charge alleges that he falsified an entry on a police incident log again at Hartlepool on March 24 of 2019.

Coffey appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 4.

No pleas to the allegations were entered and the case was sent to Teesside Crown Court on Friday, October 2.

Coffey was granted unconditional bail by the court until that date.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said the force was unable to comment at this time while the legal proceedings were ongoing.
