Cleveland Police officer to go on trial next year over improper conduct allegations

A Cleveland Police officer has denied allegations he acted improperly and is set to stand trial next year.

Robert Coffey, 34, pleaded not guilty to two counts of improper exercise of police powers or privileges at Teesside Crown Court on Friday (October 2).

They relate to an allegation that being a constable he failed to properly investigate claims a woman had been assaulted between March 22 and 25 last year.

The second charge alleges he falsified an entry on a police incident log on the same dates.

It is understood the alleged offences are said to have taken place in Hartlepool.

A provisional trial date outside of the Cleveland Police force area has been set for November 22 next year at Newcastle Crown Court.

Judge Stephen Ashurst said all local court centres are experiencing lengthy trial delays due to the Covid pandemic.

“If an earlier one can be secured so much the better for all concerned,” he said.

Coffey was granted unconditional bail.
