That is the plea from Cleveland Police as it urges people in Hartlepool to follow the rules of a new national lockdown.

The force says it has dedicated Covid patrols operating in the town and further afield – and warns that those who continue to ignore the regulations can expect to face action.

Superintendent Emily Harrison, who is leading the Covid-19 response for Cleveland Police, said: “We all pulled together in March last year, clapped for our carers, and looked after each other. We need to reinvigorate the same community spirit to protect the most vulnerable this time around.

“People should know the rules by now. We will engage with residents and for anyone who is genuinely unsure, the vast majority of interactions are positive and end quickly. We will fine people who are deliberately flouting the rules and target our work at those whose behaviour is a great risk to others.

“We have families and friends who we want to keep safe, so if you can’t abide by the restrictions to protect yourself, do it because you have people who you love. Stay home, protect the NHS, and save lives."

The appeal comes after council leader, Cllr Shane Moore, urged residents to follow restrictions in place.

He said: “The evidence around the new strand is clear and now – more than ever – is the time for us to stay at home and protect the people we love.”
