Hartlepool man denies seven rape allegations against three women

A Hartlepool man will stand trial after being charged with several rape allegations.

Leigh Pear, 38, of Milbank Road, Hartlepool, is accused of seven counts of rape against three women.

He pleaded not guilty when each charge was put to him in a hearing at Teesside Crown Court on Friday, May 22.

A prospective trial date of December 16 has been set, but the judge said efforts would be made for the case to be heard sooner if possible.

It is expected to last five days.

Pear was remanded in custody but his lawyers are to apply for bail next week.

Judge Howard Crowson said: “The earliest trial at the moment is December 16. I will simply remand you in custody for now.”

Jury trials are being fixed many months in advance as they are currently unable to be held within the social distancing restrictions.
