He said he met the woman, who cannot be identified, on a night out in Hartlepool town centre.

Rowntree said the atmosphere was good earlier in the night and the two kissed.

He disputed the alleged victim’s account that she objected to him putting his hand inside her jeans telling him she was ‘not a kid’.

Rowntree told the court she made the comment later to say they could not go back to her house.

He said she asked if they could go to his house but he said no as he was staying with his sister.

Richard Herrmann, defending, asked Rowntree what he thought they were going into the alley for.

He said: “Sex. I thought she was up for it.”

Rowntree claimed they put their hands down each others trousers and that she briefly performed oral sex on him.

He said she moved into positions so he could have sex with her.

Mr Herrmann said: “Was she saying ‘no’?”

Rowntree said she didn’t. He also denied she shouted or told him to stop.

Mr Herrmann asked: "Did you have your hand forcibly on her neck pushing her down?”

Rowntree said: “No, definitely not.” He further denied she was crying or distraught.

He said the woman changed when a group of students arrived saying: “She wasn’t being herself.”

He said he left the scene because he was being accused of rape by the students and claimed he gave them his full name and address.

Paul Cleasby, prosecuting, suggested he only gave the area and was lying to give the jury a false impression.

Mr Cleasby put it to Rowntree he was determined to have sex with the woman.

The trial continues.
