Man arrested after 'chasing staff with hammer' at Sainsbury's in Hartlepool

A 22-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of four offences following an incident where a man stole from a Sainsbury’s store before returning and chasing staff with a hammer and assaulting a police officer.

Cleveland Police officers have arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of possessing a weapon in a public place, assault by beating, affray and theft from a shop.

It follows an incident at the Sainsbury’s, in Murray Street, Hartlepool, on Thursday, November 19 at around 4.50pm.

It was reported to police that a man had stolen alcohol from the premises and then returned to the store and chased a number of staff members around the store with a hammer.

When emergency services attended the scene and a police officer was reportedly assaulted by the male suspect.

Cleveland Police has confirmed that the man arrested in connection with the incident currently remains in police custody whilst enquiries continue.
