Miller, 19, of Stockton Road, and Briggs, 18, of Dent Street, both in Hartlepool, did not enter any pleas during a short preliminary hearing at Teesside Magistrates' Court.

A third man, who was in hospital after the allegation was made, is likely to be charged in connection with the same incident, the court heard.

The magistrates ordered the case to be sent to Teesside Crown Court for a preliminary hearing which is set to be held on July 26.

Miller and Briggs were both remanded in custody in the meantime.
