Cleveland Police say officers began following a large red bike after it failed to stop for a marked patrol car in Blacklock Gardens, Hartlepool, with the pursuit continuing in the Summerhill, Owton Manor and Greatham areas of town.

The police helicopter joined the search and stingers were used before the quad finally stopped when it became entangled in wire at the edge of a field in Marsh House Lane.

A force spokesperson said: “It’s believed another rider decamped from the quad during the time it was travelling and inquiries are on-going to identify and speak to him.”

The incident started on Saturday, January 23, at around 11.25pm and lasted for 36 minutes.

Hartlepool neighbourhoods’ Chief Inspector Pete Graham said: “We’re having many issues with off road bikes in general and we’ll continue to work with partners, including our specialist colleagues in CDSOU, to seize any bikes or quads found to be used in an antisocial or illegal manner.

“This activity can really affect quality of life for our residents and I want to reassure them we have firm plans in place to tackle it by targeting and prosecuting offenders and seizing their vehicles.

“For that to happen we also need to gather information on where these bikes are being stored and I’d appeal for residents to get in touch if they can help.

“You can phone Cleveland Police on the 101 number, or report to Crimestoppers anonymously online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org or phone 0800 555 111.”
