Police name cyclist killed in hit and run as search for driver of white van with blue logo continues

Police have named the 58-year-old cyclist who died after he was hit by a van in Hartlepool in Friday morning.

Cleveland Police has confirmed the man was Michael Waistell who lived in Hartlepool.

Police are still searching for the driver of a white van involved in the crash who fled the scene.

The incident happened at approximately 6.45am today, Friday 31st July.

A police spokesperson said: “Mr Waistell’s black Carerra mountain bike was in collision with a white Ford Transit on Mowbray Road.

“Mr Waistell suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Specially trained officers are supporting his family and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.”

Officers say that inquiries into the incident are continuing and are now appealing for anyone who may have seen a white Transit van with a blue logo in the area of Catcote Road, Fens or Owton Manor between 6am and 7:30am this morning, to contact them.

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police, or anyone who may have dash cam footage which could assist the investigation, is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting incident number 123481.

The road was closed for several hours as forensic investigators worked at the scene of the crash.

The North East Ambulance service confirmed that a passerby was carrying out CPR on Mr Waistell when an ambulance was dispatched.

A statement from the North East Ambulance Service added: “We were called at 6.48am to a cyclist unconscious after being involved in a road traffic collision.

"CPR was in progress and we dispatched a double-crewed ambulance and a clinical care manager.”
