The aim is to reduce the spread of the virus as lockdown restrictions are slowly lifted across the country.

But Cleveland Police have warned residents to be ‘vigilant’ and look out for potential scammers taking advantage of the system.

A spokesperson said: “If anyone thinks that they may have been a victim of fraud, or they’re unsure whether a caller is genuine, please remain vigilant and verify the information you have been given.

“If NHS Test and Trace calls you by phone, the service will be using a single phone number which is: 0300 0135 000. The only website the service will ask you to visit is: https://contact-tracing.phe.gov.uk.”

Officers have advised that contact tracers will never ask you any of the following:

- To dial a premium rate number (for example, those starting 09 or 087)

- To make any form of payment

- For any details about your bank account

- For your social media identities or login details, or those of your contacts

- For any passwords or PINs, or ask you to set up any passwords or PINs over the phone

- To purchase a product

- To download any software to your device or ask you to hand over control of your PC, smartphone or tablet

- To access any website that does not belong to the Government or NHS

Anyone who has been subject to a scam can contact action fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via the website.

Victims can also call Cleveland Police 101.
