Teenager arrested after suspected Billingham arson attack causes damage running into thousands

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a suspected arson attack caused thousands of pounds’ damage at a Billingham council depot.

Detectives are appealing for information as part of an investigation into the fire at the rear yard of Stockton Council premises in Leeholme Road.

The incident happened around 6.50pm on Tuesday, October 20, when numerous wheelie bins and other refuse containers were set alight.

Police say the damage is extensive and the cost is believed to run ‘into thousands of pounds’.

The teenager has been arrested on suspicion of arson and he has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Sergeant Gary Cookland, from Stockton neighbourhood policing team, said: “The investigation into this fire is ongoing and we would encourage anyone with information regarding it to contact us.

"Any witnesses are asked to call us on 101 quoting incident number 172628, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
