The effects of inhalation can cause dizziness and fainting, which increases the risks of injury through falling or otherwise having an accident.

The use of nitrous oxide for inhalation is banned. It is illegal to give it away or sell it. The penalty for supply or production is up to seven years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.

Cleveland Police say the fact that canisters are often found in car parks suggests the gas is used by people who then go on to drive.
