The curtain went up on Monday night and audiences can catch the show at the Raby Road theatre every night up until Saturday, January 23. Denise Tyzack, principal of the academy, said: “The pantomime is always very well supported. We usually get good houses.

“A couple of the dads have really gone to town with the sets and props this year so hopefully it makes it a bit more special for our 35th year.”

The leading parts are played by adults who are ably supported by a large cast of academy youngsters aged from three up to 18.

“There are lots of song and dace numbers and we still follow the traditional panto slapstick and cries of ‘it’s behind you’,” added Denise.
