The Hartlepool trained boxer went toe-to-toe with the fighter known as “the Celtic Warrior” at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night.

Irish prospect Jono Carroll extended his undefeated run to 10 straight bouts but he knew he had been in a fight, said Gus Robinson Developments head coach Peter Cope.

The Dubliner got the verdict 60-55 but Cope said he had nothing but praise for the 20-year-old from Seaham.

“I am over the Moon wth Jordan,” said Cope.

“I couldn’t have asked for any more from him.

“He was always behind in the contest but never out of it - he proper tested a kid they are expecting big things from.

“The ref had it 60-55 but I don’t think the scoreline does Jordan justice.

“He pushed Carroll to the limit and won a lot of respect and admirers for the way he performed.

“After the fight (Matchroom promoter) Eddie Hearn came over and said ‘that kid can fight’ and I said ‘I know’.

“Jordan’s only been with us a relatively short time but he keeps showing us he’s going in the right direction.

“All he maybe lacks at the moment is some spite in his punches, but he’s only 20.

“That will come as he develops his man strength.”

Ellison went into the match as the underdog despite winning three of his four bouts since joining the Gus Robinson Developments stable.

Taking his position in the away corner on a Matchroom show, the odds were stacked against him as he faced the 2014 Prizefighter champion.

“Jordan has had some great performances and wins so far,” added Cope.

“Here he was stepping up a level against Carroll, but he showed he could compete at that level.”
