Emergency services cut through wall to rescue teenager trapped between buildings in County Durham

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service Specialist crews were called to Newton Aycliffe’s Thames Centre this afternoon.

Crews from Darlington, Spennymoor, Durham and Bishop Auckland attended, with Working at Height crews from Newton Aycliffe and Seaham and Bishop Auckland’s Special Rescue Unit.

An advisor from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service’s attended to offer advice alongside the Hazardous Area Rescue Team, North East Ambulance Service, Durham County Council Building Control and Durham Constabulary .

Incident Commander Rob Cherrie said: “Firefighters used a range of equipment to cut through an external wall, while reassuring him and trying to keep him calm.

“The teenager has now been transported to hospital by the ambulance service.

“I would like to commend the emergency services at the scene who worked very quickly and tirelessly to rescue the teenager from the cavity.”
