Greenwood, who has established himself as a key player for Andy Welsh's Under-21 side, has been selected for England Under-20s’ upcoming game against Canada.

Welsh praised the promising 20-year-old winger after he had a hand in all three goals in their recent 3-2 win over Everton.

"We've been working on his end product for weeks and I think he showed a much better final pass," Welsh told the Echo.

His performances have now resulted in his first international call-up at this level.

A delighted Greenwood tweeted: "Buzzing to receive my first call up for England next week. Thanks for all the nice messages, really appreciate it."

Greenwood, the Barclays U21 Premier League Player of the Month for February, is the only Sunderland player to be selected and he joins the likes of Manchester United's Marcus Rashford in the 20-man squad.
