Family's tribute to grandfather who died in A689 crash

A family has paid tribute to a much-loved grandfather who died after being knocked over by a car.

John Laycock, 73, from Billingham, was riding his bicycle when he was involved with a collision with a Renault Clio on the A689 last Thursday.

The incident took place between The Wynd and Butterwick Road at about 1.40pm.

After being treated at the scene, he was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, but sadly died.

A statement released on behalf of his family said: "John was a 73-year-old much-loved husband, father-of-three and grandfather-of-seven.

"He was a keen cyclist, fitness fanatic and lifelong Newcastle United supporter.

“He will be deeply missed by all his family and many friends.

“We as a family would like to request privacy at this time to enable us to grieve.”

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw either the car or cyclist prior to the crash to come forward.

They are also asking any drivers who have dashcam footage to get in touch.
