Grimsby Town hoping Hartlepool United's decision to release defender comes back to haunt them
The 21-year-old, who made 41 appearances for Pools, was "unfortunate" to be released at the end of last season, insists Hurst.
And he hopes Jones, who has signed a one-year deal with the Mariners, will prove a shrewd signing for the League Two newboys.

And versatile Jones is set to become a key member of their defence, with Hurst hopeful he can prove Pools were wrong to release him.
"Dan can play left-back, and centre-back – so there is some flexibility there," said Hurst.
"He is very athletic, and has some other good attributes, too.

"They have openly said that it could come back and bite them, and I'm sure Dan will be striving to do that now he's with us.

Jones played a key role in the side under Ronnie Moore as Pools pulled off the Great Escape in 2014-15 but struggled for game time under Craig Hignett.
Hurst added: "Dan has experience of playing in League Two, but he is just starting his career really.
"I've got two more players that know the division, and will bring the type of qualities that I'm looking for in the squad," Hurst told the Grimsby Telegraph.
