Hartlepool church regeneration scheme is up for an award

A former Methodist church - which was derelict for more than 20 years before being brought back into use - is a step away from a prestigious industry accolade.

Morison Hall in Hartlepool has been shortlisted in the regeneration section of the RICS North East Awards after its transformation into eight contemporary two-bedroom apartments.

Years of arson attacks meant the whole of the interior had to be stripped out. Painstaking restoration followed and the £1m project to restore and refurbish the historic building has brought it back to life.

Housing Hartlepool worked in partnership with the Hartlepool New Deal for Communities (NDC) Trust on the project with support from Hartlepool Borough Council and Esh Property Services, part of Esh Group.

And more than 40 people - including the long term unemployed, college students and people recovering from mental health issues – received training to help renovate the units.

The awards have eight categories and the winners will compete at the grand final in October.

Adam Serfontein, chair of the RICS North East Awards judging panel, said: “Despite the North East being one of the smaller UK regions, the RICS North East Awards attract a significant volume of entries every year.

“This year is no different, and our shortlist of inspiring schemes is testament to the talent and exceptional skills of our region’s property professionals.”

The regional awards will be held at The Civic Centre, Newcastle on Friday, April 15.
