The checks are being offered by Lorna Hilton, victim services officer with Hartlepool Borough Council’s Community Safety Team, who visits homes to assess homeowners’ existing security and to advise on improvements.

She is able to supply and fit a range of security devices free of charge, including window alarms, light timer switches and door chains. She is also able to provide free UV pens that can be used to mark electrical goods and other household items with owners’ addresses and post codes.

More than 350 homeowners took advantage of the checks last year, and Lorna said: “At this time of the year, lots of people tend to have new items around the house that they will have received as Christmas presents. I would urge them to protect their possessions by ensuring that their homes are as secure as possible.”
