It all takes place under one roof at the Grand Hotel, Swainson Street, between noon and 3.15pm.

Sandra Chow, chairman of Hartlepool Chinese Association, said: “The event is always, highly colourful, fun, creative – and noisy!

“We look forward to seeing you on the February 21.”

The celebrations officially get under way at 12.30pm with the opening welcome followed by red packets signifying good financial fortune being distributed at the tables. An energetic Chinese lion dance takes place before an authentic Chinese lunch.

Later in the afternoon, guests will be entertained by Chinese opera singing, Chinese dance, a Chinese fan dance and demonstration of tai chi exercise.

The afternoon culminates in a raffle draw.

Appropriately for Hartlepool, this Chinese New Year is the year of the monkey.
The centuries old major holiday is celebrated at the start of the traditional lunar Chinese calendar and festivities promote themes of good luck, happiness, wealth, and longevity.

Tickets for Hartlepool’s celebrations are priced £10 per person and are £5 for children while youngsters aged four and under go for free.

They are available now from Sandra Chow on 0792 7060168 or from Irene Cross at Hartlepool Civic Centre on (01429) 523100.
