Captain’s charities -

Following a year of enjoyable and successful captaincy, Neal Thornley sat back and reflected upon his great satisfaction of being part of a club, who members and friends worked tirelessly in raising a truly remarkable sum of money for his nominated charities.

The money was raised by the Club members and their families and friends, contributing in so many ways, including sponsorship funds from a coast to coast cycle ride, the Great North Run, a Boxing Day dip in the bitter cold North Sea and a ten mile/ten pub walk.

Auctions and raffles, from generous donations by such as Graeme Storm, who donated his tour bag used in his famous South African victory, all made significant contribution to this tremendous total.

Neal said, “I was humbled by the generosity of those giving of both their time and money in support of the charities.

“We never set any targets and never tried to push the charity angle or cajole anyone into donating and I think this helped us.

“I’m delighted how it all turned out and I think this may be the highest amount raised from the golf club and it friends.”
