Nine-year-old Lewin Tubuna is in training to cycle coast to coast in just three days to raise money for Alice House Hospice patients.

Lewin was inspired by family friend Lee Dodgson who has undertaken a number of challenges for the charity, most notably his run from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 2017. Lee said after that event that he wanted to “pass the baton”’ to someone else – and Lewin is doing just that.

Along with his dad Suli and a support team of volunteers, including Lee, Lewin will embark on the 150-mile round trip just days before returning home on his 10th birthday.

Lewin and his family have already held a fundraising evening in support of the project, The Hospice Hoedown at Hartlepool Workingmen’s Club (featuring Pek & Wanley), raising a fantastic £923.

As a pupil of Barnard Grove Primary School, Lewin has been supported by his classmates and teachers who helped him raise £246 with a “wear purple” day in line with the familiar colours of Alice House. On the day, Lewin spoke about his plans for the ride. The school is now holding a competition to design a logo for the event.

Greg Hildreth, a fundraiser at Alice House, said: “Lewin is a great example to other young people. He’s had great support from friends, family and the wider community. We have seen a great response from businesses too who have come forward to sponsor him. I’d like to thank Lewin and everyone who has sponsored, donated or helped in any way. Finally, I’d like to wish him and his team all the very best with the bike ride.”

The following businesses have all pledged their support to Lewin: Ryan’s Fruit & Veg, Crossfit Hartlepool, Appleby Carpets, Jazz Personnel, AMA Business Services Ltd, Ian Bond Brick & Stonework, Robson Builders, Adam Marshall Personal Trainer, Andrew Thompson Decorating, Hydrochem Group, No Love Lost Collective, Guardian Windows, Pools Resprays, Seymour Civil Engineering, CATS Terminal and Boots.
