Customers at Middleton Grange in Hartlepool got to try out everything from a bicycle-powered smoothie maker to a pedal-powered gramophone and disco.

There was also a chance to use bike power to fuel a Scalextric track and it was all done to promote the benefits of healthy forms of getting around town.

The initiative – called the Pop-up Healthy Travel Shop – was described by organisers as a fun free event during half term to celebrate all the benefits of travelling by bus, bike and on foot.

But as well as having interactive fun, people could also collect information about walking, cycling and public transport.

Competitions for prizes were also held.

As well as being aimed at shopping centre customers, shopping centre staff were also being encouraged to take part in the eight-hour free event which promoted alternatives to the car.
