Hartlepool man stole bag of shopping from Sainsbury's '˜because he was hungry'

Dean Sharp, 27, filled his bag in Sainsbury’s and walked out without paying, Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court heard.

“He was identified from CCTV footage,” said David Carmichael, prosecuting. “He admitted the offence in his police interview, saying it was stupid and he was sorry.”

The court heard Sharp has eight previous convictions for theft, and was recently released from a prison sentence for drugs offences.

Sharp, 27, of Oakley Gardens, Hartlepool, admitted theft on February 3.

Neil Taylor, defending, said in mitigation: “Mr Sharp was depressed and hungry at the time. It was a silly attempt, and his state benefits have since been sorted out, which should mean he has no need to steal for food in the future.

“He is also on post sentence supervision following his release from prison..”

The magistrates ordered Sharp to pay £16 compensation and £85 costs. The money will be deducted from his benefits.
