Hartlepool Parkrun reaches 100

One hundred not out. That's a weekly Hartlepool event which attracts dozens of people each time it is held.

The town’s popular Parkrun has been held for the 100th time and around 85 runners, joggers and walkers met to tackle the 5 kilometre route which starts out from Hartlepool Marina, and follows a route towards Seaton Carew and back.

Parkrun is an initiative which encourages people to run 5 kilometres at 9am on a Saturday, on accurately measured routes.

A team of marshals help you to get under way, follow the right course and record your time.

And as the summer months approach, numbers are expected to swell.

There’s an extra reason for everyone involved to celebrate as the Hartlepool run has also just celebrated its second anniversary.

Sue McKenna is one of the race directors who helps to co-ordinate the popular weekly runs.

She said: “Parkrun is something for people of all abilities and it is a community event which is aimed at getting people fit and active and moving
more.”

Everyone from the really fit (who average around 17 to 18 minutes for the course) to those who walk the whole route and take around an hour – they all make up the Parkrun family.

There’s no pressure to go full pelt. It’s your pace and you determine what that is.
