The collision happened at 3.28pm on Sunday with the Highways Agency afterwards closing the road in both directions for more than 90 minutes.

The A66 between Scotch Corner and Penrith is regarded as one of the country's most dangerous routes because of its mix of single and dual lanes and because its height above sea level leaves it exposed to extreme weather.

Officers from the North Yorkshire major collision investigation team are appealing for any witnesses to Sunday's crash who have not yet made contact with them to call police on 101, select option 2 and ask to speak to Traffic Sergeant Jeremy Bartley.
