Hartlepool seaside pub could be turned into shops

The Schooner pub, in Seaton Carew, suddenly ceased trading earlier this year after many years.

Now a developer is seeking planning permission from Hartlepool Borough Council for a change of use from pub to retail units.

People can comment on the plans between now and July 16 before a decision is made.

Applicant SEP Properties is also looking to convert the first-floor living accommodation into two apartments.

In a planning statement the applicant stated: “The scheme has been developed generally within the overall footprint of the former public house, with small- scale demolitions to the north-west elevation and the southern corner.

“Additional retail units are proposed within the footprint of the existing building. Off street car parking is provided at the front of the proposed retail frontage.”

Alterations are also proposed to the car park and provision of a bin storage area.

SEP Properties added: “Returning vacant and vandalised buildings into a productive use is a vital part in creating sustainable spaces.

“Local residents can walk to our site without having to travel by car to a more remote location.”

In April, Birmingham-based Enterprise Inns, which owned The Schooner, in Warrior Drive, confirmed it had completed the sale of the freehold.

About 10 staff were understood to have been working there when it closed, some for almost 20 years.

But Enterprise Inns said the pub was leased to a publican who operated it as their own independent business.
