Megan Grocott, 20, from Felixstowe Close, Fens, Hartlepool, will trek across China this year in the hope of raising cash for Macmillan Cancer Care.

Megan, who is studying Childhood and Youth Studies at Teesside University, is holding a quiz and karaoke night at The Fens Pub where she works on March 5.

Kicking off at 9pm, the night will also feature a raffle, games and entertainment, in the hope of raising the remaining £800 towards the target of £3,500. Of the fundraising, £1,600 will pay for the trip, with the rest of the money going to the charity.

“My total is currently £2735.89 and I have until April to raise the full £3,500,” she said.

“I am just going to see how it goes but hopefully I will raise the funds in time.

“It is scary how close it is until the trek now but I am really excited.

“I have met someone who will be on the trip, and she is really excited too.”

Megan will meet the 40 others taking part in the China Hiking Challenge for Macmillan at Heathrow Airport before embarking on the 11-day guided trek through China on April 22.

The trek comes after Megan received an email invite from the charity following previous charity events she had taken part in.

She was inspired to fundraise for Macmillan after her auntie successfully battled cancer in her youth.

“I have been training by walking for an hour and a half every day and walking for three hours on the weekend along the Marina and Seaton,” she said.

“It is a fantastic opportunity.”
