Hartlepool students show off their performing skills

A-level students from English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College organised the annual talent show, which saw pupils from Year 7 to Year 13 performed in front of a panel of judges to win cash prizes.

The show saw acts including musicians, dancers and singers, perform for parents and members of the community.

Performing arts teacher Charlotte Stevens said the event has been running for the last three years.

“Students come for an audition to be in the talent show and we select so many to go through,” she said.

“Performing arts A-level students have to create an event as part of their unit, so they have organised this.

“Judges from outside the school judged the event. We had musician Dave Harrison, Charlotte Cope – a former performing arts pupil at the school – and Aaron Staunch, who is part of Ruff Diamond street dance group. Our new head Stephen Hammond also judged.”

The first place prize of £50 went to Year 8 pupil Jack Palmer, 13, for his piano and singing performance; second place, which was £30, went to Year 9 pupil Alice Ferguson, aged 14, for her dance display and third place of £20 went to Michael Winship, 13, from Year 8, for his ventriloquist performance.

Miss Stevens added: “The aim of the event is to get the students in the school to put themselves forward to gain confidence and to support each other.”
