Craig Hignett sent out a strong starting XI, but lost out to a 10th minute Kevin van Veen goal.

Pools dominated the second half with Jake Carroll and sub Nathan Thomas hitting the woodwork and keeper Luke Daniels denying Billy Paynter.

Pools started brightly enough but it was Scunthorpe who led in the 10th minute, Josh Morris running well down the left with his cross into the sixyard box perfect for VAN VEEN who could not miss from close in.

It should have been two four minutes latter but Hakeeb Adelakun scuffed his shot horribly wide.

Pools were knocking the ball around nicely without getting a sight of the Iron goal, but there was an attempt on the half-hour, Billy Paynter heading wide from Carl Magnay's cross.

After the break, Pools again played a lot of football but chances were rare, though, at the other end, van Veen had a low shot saved by Carson.

Paynter went close to an equaliser in the 62nd minute when he seized on a rare away mistake but keeper Luke Daniels saved well.

Hignett then made a double change bringing on Josh Laurent and Nathan Thomas for Nicky Deverdics and Padraig Amond.

After few chances for Pools, three came at once in the 67th minute, when Woods had a shot blocked, Carroll fired the rebound against the woodwork, before Thomas headed wide.

Thomas then had a gilt-edged chance when he clipped the post after a neat free-kick move while Alessandra found the side-netting from an acute angle 11 minutes from time.
