Hartlepool United loan signing Ellis Harrison will provide competition for Pools

Moore has added Bristol Rovers forward Ellis Harrison to the squad because he refuses to pay what he sees as extortionate price demands for unnamed players.

“We’ve tried to bring in players [on permanent transfers] and we’ve had two bids were turned down,” said Moore. “But we won’t be going back, they are looking for ridiculous money.

“Fortunately, we’ve got a lad coming in on loan.”

Harrison was due to train with Pools today and the 21-year-old will have arrived at Maiden Castle in fine fettle.

The exciting Wales U21 international scored Bristol’s late winner yesterday in the 2-1 victory at Oxford, a result which sent Darrell Clarke’s side fourth, just two points behind their hosts.

Supersub Harrison coolly slotted home the penalty after former Pools striker Jermaine Easter had been brought down by Oxford keeper Sam Slocombe.

Moore says his signing will bring competition and can inspire greater efforts from his current players, if they know their place is under threat.

“You look at Scotty Fenwick,” the boss told SportMail. “He did well up front again and he’s put away that chance Nathan Thomas has set up for him.

“It’s difficult when you are up there on your own, but he’s been strong.

“But he knows we are trying to get players in.

“It’s surprising how players will shift themselves an extra 25 per cent when they realise someone else is coming in.”

However, Moore added that he will be happy to alter the system to suit the personnel at his disposal.

“I’m not against playing 4-4-2 at home, which would mean a midfielder coming out,” explained Moore who takes his team to Accrington Stanley tomorrow night – weather permitting.

“There’s a little bit of pressure on everyone.

“Maybe away from home, we will play the way we did here against Wycombe.

“I can see Nathan playing in the hole as well.

“There’s pressure to produce on everyone and that’s what we want.

“We are getting into a Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday period and we won’t be playing with the same XI.

“Billy Paynter won’t be able to do it like that when he comes back so we will pick the games.

“The competition will be a good thing for us.”

Harrison has the ability to operate either through the middle or out wide.

A hero for the Pirates during their Conference promotion triumph last season – including a goal in the play-off final at Wembley against Grimsby – Harrison has found himself on the bench for much of this season.

The Newport-born players has scored six goals for Rovers in 24 appearances this season.

He came off the bench late on for Easter when Bristol won 3-0 at the Vic back in September and his boss, ex-Pools promotion hero Clarke, feels a move might benefit him and, ultimately, Rovers.

Harrison will come straight into the squad for Pools’ visit to Accrington tomorrow night, providing it beats the weather.
