The 38-year-old from Hartlepool is tackling the 7 Ironman 7 challenge which is a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile marathon - but he’s not just doing it once.

He is doing it seven days in a row!

Matt wants to raise money for the Tiny Lives Trust which helps to care for premature and sick newborn babies, as well as their mothers and families.

He has already started training for the mega challenge which will see him burn around 11,000 calories a day.

Matt, who works as a teacher and also with triathletes, has certainly got the pedigree.

He has raced for Great Britain at duathlon and triathlon level and was the fastest Briton in his age group for 2015.

Matt told Community Centres of the level of preparation which was going into the project. He will be racing for 12 to 14 hours each day.

He is training specifically so that his heart is working at a rate which balances the need to spare as much energy as possible, with the need to not be on his feet for any longer than necessary.

He is also having to work out the science of nutrition so that he gets the best fuel into his body with the right balance of carbohydrates.

But most of all, said Matt, there was the psychological challenge.

“Physically, I know I am tough enough but it is mentally. In the final throes of a big race, you don’t know how you will feel.”

Day 1 of the challenge is on Monday, July 17 next year, starting with a swim at Jacksons Dock in Hartlepool Marina, plus the bike ride and run.

The next four days will also be in Hartlepool before the challenge moves to Ellerton and Catterick, finishing in Nottingham on the final day.

He is calling on people to do parts of the course with him to help him achieve his mission.
