Some added a few acrobatic cartwheels to liven up the exercise.

PE teacher Viv Knight who organised the day, said: “It was a great effort by all of the pupils who participated and the day was great fun.

“The pupils ran, jogged and walked and we also had some piggy backs and a few cartwheels along the way.

“The school has a strong commitment to raise money for a wide range of deserving local and national charities and we are delighted to have raised so much money.”

As well as completing the Sport Relief mile around the grounds, pupils raised hundreds of pounds by each paying £1 to leave their uniforms at home for the day and donned sports kit instead ready for taking on the challenge.

Their efforts resulted in them raising the grand total of £680.

Over at High Tunstall in Elwick Road, over 100 students ran 5km –just over three miles – to raise over £1,000 for Sport Relief.

Although it wasn’t an official race, Lewis Lundrigan, Jack Wilson, Alex Dickson, Harrison Higham, Chloe Monkman, Jordan Brough and Sam Sanger were the pick of the runners, all completing the course in under 25 minutes.

Hartlepool fundraisers took part in a series of events for the charity which raises money for good causes at home and abroad.

On Sunday, runners completed distances of one, three or six miles on the promenade between Seaton Carew and Hartlepool.

And on Sport Relief Day itself last Friday, a team of around 50 Hartlepool College of Further Education students and staff hit the promenade, many in fancy dress.

Young children from Scallywags nursery at Brierton Sports Centre completed sponsored dances raising several hundred pounds for the cause.

It all added to Sport Relief’s record-breaking grand total for this year of more than £55 million.
