Jobs hope as Aldi reveals plans for new store

Aldi hopes to open a new shop on the site of the former Peterlee Building Supplies in Yoden Way, on the border of Peterlee and Horden.

Before it submits plans, it is holding a consultation event to sound out the views of residents and businesses.

On Monday, it will hold a session at Horden Social Welfare Centre in Seventh Street, Horden, with an exhibition to set out its ideas.

The firm says if the proposals get the go ahead, up to 30 full and part-time jobs will be created, as well as additional roles when the site is constructed.

The store would join its existing shop in Peterlee town centre and would offer 104 car-parking spaces, which will be free for up to 90 minutes, as well as cycle parking.

A spokesperson for Aldi said: “We are excited to be bringing forward our plans for Yoden Way. The new store would improve shopping choice, and reduce the need for our existing customers to travel out of the area to visit our store at Bede Way.

“We would like to encourage local residents to come down to our exhibition 
and view the plans in more detail.

“Members of the project team will be available to discuss the proposal and listen to feedback.

“The proposed store would complement the existing pattern of trade in Horden, adding to the vitality and viability of the area 
and helping to keep spend local.”

The company has said the store has been “carefully designed” to ensure it sits comfortably within the site and improves the look of the area.

It says unlike other large retailers, it does not act as a one-stop shop, which encourages customers to visit others in the area.

The consultation event will be held from 3pm to 7pm.
