Leukaemia battler Ellie's Easter treat as Pools mascot

Avid Poolie Ellie Mae Waugh, aged 10, will be a mascot for Pools’ home game against Wimbledon AFC tomorrow.

It is after charity Miles for Men, which has been supporting Ellie through her battle, arranged the treat with Pools’ chief executive Russ Green.

Kevin Hill, of Miles for Men, said: “We have kept in touch when Ellie was getting treatment at the RVI in Newcastle and she is now back at home.

“She is a die-hard Hartlepool United fan and just before Christmas me and Michael Day went to visit her and gave her two signed football shirts.

“Her face when she found out she was going to be the mascot – she was over the moon because it’s something she has always wanted to do.”

Ellie, of West View, will get to walk out onto the pitch with the players and have her picture taken by official photographers.

Kevin added: “She is always a happy-go-lucky sort of girl and we think she deserves it. It is a good thing by the club and we are grateful to Russ Green for arranging it.

“It is nice to work alongside the club as being their chosen charity.”

Ellie, who was diagnosed last July, spent her birthday, Halloween and Christmas in hospital.

She has been nominated by dad Dean Waugh, 46, in this year’s Child of Courage category of the Best of Hartlepool Awards.
