Man caught with drugs while on bail for attacking his wife

Saaid Bayat, 36, of Aberdeen Road, was sentenced after admitting four drugs offences and possessing £2,000 deemed to be criminal property.

Teesside Crown Court heard that while he was on bail he also assaulted his wife.

Bayat was driving his car when he was stopped by police who found crack cocaine; diazepam; and buprenorphine along with £2,000 in cash in the vehicle on July 27, last year.

He was arrested and police searched his home, where cannabis was found, along with Bayat’s phone containing text messages showing he was involved in the supply of drugs.

Prosecutor David Crook said: “The cocaine and cannabis were for personal use.

“He accepts he was possessing with the intent to supply diazepam and buprenorphine.

“Whilst on bail, the defendant became involved in the matter of common assault.

“In the early hours of January 24 he assaulted his wife.

“This caused swelling and bruising to her left eye and lip.”

Bayat pleaded guilty to one count of possessing Class A drug crack cocaine; one count of possessing with intent to supply Class C drug diazepam; one count of possessing with intent to supply Class C drug buprenorphine; one count of possession of Class B drug cannabis; and one count of possessing criminal property, namely £2,000 in cash.

He also pleaded guilty to one count of common assault.

David Lamb, defending, asked the judge to impose a suspended sentence.

He was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to five drug related offences and one count of common assault.

Judge Howard Crowson also ordered Bayat to complete 28 weeks of community service.

He said: “Failure to do any of those things will result in you serving a prison sentence.”
