Mary, who received a birthday card from the Queen, said: “I’ve had a lovely day. All my family came to the home and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Mary was born on February 2, 1916, and lived in Lynn Street, Hartlepool, before moving to Lincoln with husband Robert during the Second World War.

After Robert was killed in 1943, Mary moved back to the town and spent 45 years working in Singer Sewing Machines, where she also ran classes teaching local women to sew.

The pensioner, who has lived at the home for the last seven years, was joined by her daughter, Mary Crosby, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dave Crosby, Mary’s son-in-law, said: “Mary is very well liked in the care home by the other residents and the staff, who celebrated with her and all the family today.

“She looks very well for 100 years old and has had a great life.”

When Mary was born the First World War had been ongoing for 19 months and that same year Coca-Cola brought its current formula to the market.

Albert Einstein also completed his theory of relativity and Charlie Chaplin signed a contract for $10,000 a week at Mutual Studios.
