The Sun claim that Tony Pulis' side are 'closing in' on a £7m deal for the striker, who has been in high demand this summer.

Waghorn, a former Sunderland youngster, netted 16 times last season in a productive campaign for the Tractor Boys.

And such form inevitably attracted interest, with Derby County and Sheffield Untied among the clubs believed to be keen on a deal for the 28-year-old.

However, today's report suggests that Boro look set to win the race as they eye a replacement for Patrick Bamford - who looks set to seal a £7m move to Leeds Untied later today.

The report claims that Pulis made his move for Waghorn yesterday evening when it became clear that Bamford's switch to Leeds would be finalised.

Such a move would signal a return to his North East roots for the striker, who was born in South Shields.
