Most Hartlepool pupils clinch chosen school place

The number of pupils clinching their first choice of secondary school in Hartlepool has risen this year.

In 2016 91.5% of students got their first place compared to 92.16%n this year.

For the coming academic year a further 5.68% got their second choice of school and 0.45% clinched their third place.

This year 1109 parents have applied for secondary places for their child in the town.

Councillor Alan Clark, chair of Hartlepool Council’s Children’s Services Committee said: “I’m delighted that 92.16% of children have been allocated their first choice of secondary school for this September which is up on last year’s figure of 91.5%.

“The council works very hard alongside schools to ensure that there is an appropriate spread of school places across the town and it’s very pleasing that over 98% of children have been allocated either their first, second or third choice preference.”

In County Durham more than 5,000 children have received a place at one of their chosen secondary schools for September 2017.

Parents of 5,088 soon to be Year 7 pupils have received offers for the forthcoming academic year, with 98.3% of them given one of their preferred choices.

Coun Ossie Johnson, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “We know that for parents the decision of where to send their children is a big one and so we are delighted to be able to offer so many of them their first choice schools.

In Durham 95.3% of pupils got their first place, 2.5% their second and 0.5% their third.
