Newcastle's Jamaal Lascelles vows to learn from dismissal

The Newcastle United defender was sent off in last week’s 3-0 defeat to Everton.

And Lascelles had to sit out last weekend’s 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion through suspension.

The 22-year-old was dismissed in injury time at Goodison Park after Ross Barkley went down in the box under a challenge from him.

Barkley converted the resulting penalty, his second of the game, to cap a miserable night for relegation-threatened Newcastle.

Lascelles – who had replaced the injured Chancel Mbemba late in the first half – feels he was taught a valuable lesson by the outstanding Barkley on Merseyside.

“Up until the red card I thought I was doing quite well,” said Lascelles.

“But it’s one of those where I can learn from it.

“Credit to Ross, he was really smart with what he did. He stopped and I ran into the back of him, he knew what he was doing.

“I know what I did wrong, and we’ve got to take the positives from the game.”

Lascelles cheered his team-mates on against West Brom from the sidelines.

The result lifted the club out of the Premier League’s relegation zone ahead of Saturday’s game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

“(It was an) excellent result – really pleased for the boys,” said Lascelles, who captained United’s Under-21s, including new signing Seydou Doumbia, against Stoke City on Monday night.

Lascelles feels 17th-placed Newcastle can carry on up the table if they can replicate their performance against West Brom.

“Every game we need to treat it like it’s a cup final,” said the England Under-21 international. We’ve got to be getting points. We can’t be losing and we can’t really be drawing either.

“If we play like we did against West Brom then we’ll have no problems. Now we’re at the stage, a crucial time where we need to start winning games.

“We’ve got some good players. We’ve bought more good players. We’ve got pace, and Doumbia came in and played really well.

“So, hopefully, he’ll come in and do a job for us at the weekend.”
