Norma Bell murder: Police given extra time to quiz suspect over Hartlepool OAP's death

Detectives investigating the murder of Hartlepool pensioner Norma Bell have been granted extra time to question a suspect.

They spent yesterday quizzing a 32-year-old man on suspicion of the murder of the 79-year-old, who was found dead at the weekend.

Her body was found after a fire was reported at her home in Westbourne Road.

She had been killed before the blaze began, some time between late evening on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Norma Bell murder: Police appeal for information on missing television

A man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday night.

Police have secured a magistrates' warrant to detain the man in custody for a longer period of time.

Officers have reminded those in the local community with elderly or vulnerable neighbours or relatives to keep an eye on them.

They also reminded people not to let strangers into their home with first checking their identification.

Anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious from late on Saturday evening into Sunday morning is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
